in my first episode of payanam i wrote about pondicherry and chidambaram.in this second episode i would like to write about the temples of subrahmanya near pondy..mailam and tiruttani, a holy town on the way to tirupati.
MAILAM
mailam or mayilam is situated 30 kms from pondicherry and 15 kms from tindivanam. the lord subrahmanyeswara got peacock as his vehicle in mailam mayil in tamil means peacock, so the place is called mayilam, later called as mailam. demon surapadma who ruling the land is killing brahmins and torturing people. then they worshipped murugan. kumara swamy then came and fought with his sulam weapon ferociously. having defeated, surapadman pleaded the lord tat he should be used as his mount/vehicle. the lord agreed his tearful request and from then, surapadman in the disguise of peacock became the lords vehicle.
the tank in mailam is called varaha tank. the temple is on a small mountain and devotees prefer to walk. many monkeys welcome us. the idol of subrahmanya looks so peaceful and powerful. our mind will forget all sorrows and will find peace after seeing lord. abhishekas are performed if we requested.
